Anchoring is the problem of how to create, and to maintain in time, the connection between symbol- and signal-level representations of the same physical object. This is an important aspect of the connection between symbolic and sensory based processes in autonomous robotic systems.
The inspiration for this Special Issue came from a 2001 AAAI Fall Symposium on the same subject. That Symposium witnessed the emergence of a new inter-disciplinary community interested in the development of general theories of anchoring. The aim of this special issue is to collect relevant pieces of work that can be instrumental in building such theories.
