Short bio

I am currently Associate Professor in Computer Science at the Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS, Örebro University, Sweden). I am a graduate of Computer Science Engineering at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", where I earned my PhD in 2007. I was previously a research assistant at the Italian National Research Council (ISTC-CNR), where I worked on AI tools for space mission planning on a grant from the European Space Agency.


Research

My research interests lie at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. I focus specifically on constraint reasoning, planning and scheduling, and meta-CSP techniques for hybrid reasoning.

Much of my work nowadays focuses on developing constraint reasoning algorithms for robot planning and for context recognition from sensor traces. In the past 5 years, I have been applying these techniques in two broad application areas: service robots/sensor systems for use in domestic environments; and decision support tools for industrial applications with large autonomous vehicles. I am fascinated by the problem of using AI for robots, and I find that some of the most compelling research questions in AI originate from the use of model-based approaches to robot control.

I am the initiator and principal maintainer of the Meta-CSP Framework (metacsp.org), a software API for supporting the theoretical study and implementation of hybrid reasoning algorithms.
